Is Your Central AC Fan Not Spinning? Here’s Why & What To Do

A malfunctioning central AC unit can quickly turn your home into an uncomfortable sauna, not ideal during a hot Boston summer. If you notice your central AC fan isn’t spinning, don’t fret! Here are some common culprits and some solutions to get your cool air flowing again.

  1. Check the circuit breaker: A tripped breaker is a common reason for a non-spinning fan. Locate your home’s electrical panel and identify the breaker labeled for your AC unit. If it’s switched to the “off” position, reset it by flipping it back to “on”.
  2. Inspect the air filter: A clogged air filter restricts airflow, causing the AC to overheat and potentially trip the breaker. Turn off your AC unit, remove the air filter, and replace it with a clean one. We recommend checking and replacing your air filters at least once a month.
  3. Look for debris: Outdoor AC fan blades can become obstructed by leaves, twigs, or other debris. Turn off the AC unit and carefully remove any debris blocking the blades.
  4. Capacitor problems: Your AC’s capacitor supplies the fan motor with the extra boost it needs to start and run. A malfunctioning capacitor can prevent the fan from starting, and will require a service call.
